Chromebook and Hotspot Lending: Circulation Procedure

The Basics

How does it work?

Card holders who are 18 years of age and older with an account in good standing are eligible to check out both Chromebooks and WiFi Hotspots from the New Braunfels Public library.  They can keep these items for up to four weeks with no renewal.  Holds can be placed on Chromebooks and Hotspots via our card catalog or over the phone.

Chromebooks and Hotspots must be picked up and returned from the service desk inside the library.  If you need special accommodations, don't hesitate to give us a call.

What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a personal computer running the Google Chrome operating system (Chrome OS). The devices are designed to be used while connected to the Internet and support applications that reside on the Web, rather than traditional PC applications like Microsoft Office that reside on the machine itself. Using web applications rather than traditional PC applications is known as cloud computing (basically, online storage and software).

What is a WiFi Hotspot?

A Wifi Hotspot is a device that pulls a data signal from nearby cell phone towers to provide internet access to WiFi enabled devices like tablets, laptops, televisions, and more.

Returning Your Device

Returning your Chromebook to the Library

  1. To remove all your data from the Chromebook, sign out of your account. You will see options to sign out in the same places you see options shut down the Chromebook.
  2. Once you’re back to the login screen, press and hold the “ctrl,” “alt,” “shift,” and “R” keys to initiate the “Powerwash” function. This will remove all your personal data from the Chromebook and reset it to factory default. Follow the onscreen directions.
Note: Don’t worry if you forget to do this, as library staff will ensure all devices are Powerwashed before returning them to circulation.
  3. Ensure you have the Chromebook, mouse, and charger all back in the bag.
  4. Return the device to the Service Desk at the library. Returning devices through the book drop may result in fees if the device is damaged, and/or suspension of borrowing privileges for devices in the future.

Returning your Hotspot to the Library

  1. Ensure the device is powered off and in the case, along with the charger.
  2.  Return the device to the Service Desk at the library.  Returning devices through the book drop may result in fees if the device is damaged and/or suspension of borrowing privileges for devices in the future.
