Westside Campus: Community Center & Library

Contest Rules

  1. The Edible Book Contest is open to everyone who loves books and cakes.
  2. Complete the official entry form. Entry forms are available at the WCC Library and at the main library on Common Street. The entry form must be received on or before the deadline: Saturday, August 3, at 9:00 AM. Edible creations will not be accepted until the entry drop-off date and time. City of New Braunfels employees may enter but are ineligible to win an award.
  3. Each edible creation must depict a fiction or nonfiction book or character.
  4. All entries must be family-friendly. The Westside Community Center reserves the right to reject any entries that are considered inappropriate.
  5. Each food creation must be at least 95 percent edible (made of food or foodstuffs). 
  6. The base should be no larger than 18 x 18 inches. The creation must be on a disposable base (preferably cardboard).
  7. You are encouraged to drop off your cake on Saturday, August 3, between 8:00 and 10:00 AM. 
  8. Please make plans to pick up your cake between 1:00 and 2:00 PM on Saturday (after public viewing). The Westside Community Center is not liable for any personal items that are brought into the Center.
  9. Each “edible book” submission should be accompanied by a physical copy or an image of the book used for the creation to be displayed on the day of the contest.
  10. Due to limited space, an individual or family may submit ONE “edible book” for this contest. Creations will be judged as presented for viewing. Edible books will not be judged based on photographs in the event of damage prior to drop-off.

DISCLAIMER

  1. By entering this contest, the creator of the “edible book” is giving the Westside Community Center permission to photograph and publish information on the creation and its creator on the library’s website, social media platforms, library publications, and other publications of the library’s choosing.
  2. The Westside Community Center and the City of New Braunfels accept no responsibility for the food safety of the edible books created for this event. Participants and patrons consume at their own risk.

Public Viewing & Judging

  • Saturday, August 3 – 11:00 AM-1:00 PM

Online Viewing & Voting for People’s Choice

  • Saturday, August 3 – 11:00 AM-5:00 PM

Award Announcement

  • Winners will be announced on Monday, August 5, at 12:00 PM

Pickup

  • All cakes must be picked up by 5:00 PM on Saturday, August 3

Judging & Awards

Each entry will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Originality and Creativity
  2. Skill and Construction
  3. Visual Appeal
  4. Tie-in with the book being depicted

Awards will be given in the following categories:

  1. Best of Show Adult Book – selected by judges
  2. Best of Show Young Adult Book – selected by judges
  3. Best of Show Children’s Book – selected by judges
  4. People’s Choice – determined by votes from participants and public
