The staff at the New Braunfels Public Library takes part in multiple professional training opportunities through the City of New Braunfels, numerous conferences, webinars, and other trainings specific to the library and information field. NBPL also supports continuing education for all staff. We currently have three staff members attending courses for library science degrees.
Conferences: Many of the staff attended and presented at professional library association conferences, including the Texas Library Association 2018 Annual Conference, American Library Association Annual Conference, Public Library Association Annual Conference, Texas Association for the Education of Young Children Conference, and the National ALSC Conference.
Seminars: Library staff hosted a day-long staff training session this year. This year's seminar was titled "Effectively Communicating with Colleagues and Patrons Based on Personality Types," by Pat Wagner. This gave staff insight on their own personality types as well as how to effectively work alongside colleagues and patrons with other personality types.
Webinars and Online Courses: The NBPL staff is heavily involved in attending webinars for various library specific trainings through organizations including Library Journal, TechSoup for Libraries, Infopeople, School Library Journal, and the American Library Association. Some courses included topics like staff competencies, leadership skills, storytime best practices, customer service best practices, and how to deal with angry patrons.
City Training: NBPL staff participates in training sessions offered through the City of New Braunfels. A few training opportunities that all library staff were encouraged to attend included Active Shooter Training, Cyber Security Awareness Training, and other United Way Health seminars.
New Braunfels Leadership Academy: The inaugural class of the NB Leadership Academy was chosen this past February. The city had a total of 40 applicants and only chose 20 to participate in the class. The library was proud to have two representatives. These librarians completed an 8-month course with seminars, analyzing various leadership styles, and a large group project as a final.
Database Training: This year the library began a new robust staff training initiative and has implemented trainings through Niche Academy and in-person trainings from the Digital Services Librarian. Library staff are given off-desk time to complete these courses to become proficient in basic computer skills and the use of our databases. This makes our staff consistent in database knowledge to better serve our patrons with reference questions.
The NBPL staff members are highly encouraged to join professional organizations in the library science field. Most of our librarians are active members of the Texas Library Association (TLA), the American Library Association (ALA), and the Public Library Association (PLA).
This list only exhibits a few of the many webinars, conferences, city trainings, etc. that the NBPL staff has participated in for the year 2018.
